After an exciting class with

Michael Sherrill in 2000, I experimented with altering extruded (think big macaroni here) shapes; fanciful eggs, pods and dragon heads appeared. In 2004 I finally came up with the first bird pitcher, and started a series. They were so much fun to make (play time!) and still, for the most part, maintained the functional aspects of pitchers and teapots. Many other techniques have been employed in the last year or two, and I look forward to creating new pieces.

One of the first in the ongoing bird series, this pitcher was extruded and hand-built; colored slips and clear glaze completed the piece.

After a suggestion for a fuller body, I made a teapot, thrown, extruded, and hand-built, colored with slips, and finished with a clear glaze.

I continued the bird theme, and completed three more pitchers, all thrown, extruded, and hand-built, white stoneware, colored slips, and clear glaze.

In January of 2006 I started a series of teapots, each with a hat and some kind of fun name. These took on their own personality as they were formed, and didn’t always meet up with my original idea, but I went with the flow.

Techniques acquired in a three day intensive class at Brookfield Craft Center prompted this new work, as well as a nest for the next teapot.
